Course Overview and FAQs

What are the course aims?

Students taking the Diploma in English for Academic Purposes will be prepared effectively for life and study at a UK university. The course has the following key aims:

To provide an English language qualification recognised by UK universities.  To improve and expand students' English language skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing. This will ensure that students meet the linguistic requirements of their future university studies in the UK. To provide opportunities for extensive practice in the wide range of academic tasks that students typically undertake on undergraduate and graduate degree programmes. To develop students' independent learning strategies and research skills in preparation for the demands of studying an academic discipline at a UK university.  To familiarize students with the system of higher education in the UK, its expectations and academic conventions.  To assist with the overall course objectives the Language Centre provides full guidance and support to students through the process of applying to UK universities at foundation, undergraduate and graduate levels.

Who is the course for?

Students wishing to improve their English Language for study at a UK university at foundation, undergraduate or postgraduate level. The course has also helped students wishing to improve their English language in the UK before returning to a career which requires the use of English.

Is this a foundation course?

The Diploma in English for Academic Purposes can be described as an English language foundation course because the course aims to improve students' English language for further academic study at university. Additionally, students have the opportunity to attend academic lectures in many different subject areas. These opportunities are usually available during Term 2. (For further information see the next FAQ ‘Will there be any subject content in the course?’ and Studying).

International students who require a foundation course containing English language as well as the study of a specific academic subject area (such as a science subject) in order to complete the requirements for undergraduate entry please refer to the Phoenix Academy  Language Centre one-year undergraduate foundation programmes: University Preparatory Certificate for Science and Engineering for students continuing to science or engineering courses, and the University Preparatory Certificate for the Humanities for students entering subjects in the humanities.

International students wishing to join an undergraduate course at a British university should check whether school qualifications from their country are acceptable in the UK, or whether a foundation course might be required first. School leavers interested in studying an undergraduate course at Phoenix  can find information on the acceptability of national school qualifications.

Will there be any subject content in the course?
The opportunity to attend departmental academic lectures at Phoenix  is a major strength of the Diploma course. Students gain valuable experience in listening and note-taking during these sessions, as well as learning useful terminologies and gaining a unique insight into their subject area. Lectures attended by our former students include Modern Art, Computer Science, Psychology, Law and Engineering amongst others. See Studying for more details on this excellent opportunity.

What qualifications are needed for entry to the course?
Students should have an intermediate level of English before starting the course and the level of English needed will depend on when a student chooses to start the course ( Term 1 - September, Term 2 - January or Term 3 - April). Please see Entrance Requirements for more details.

All applicants must have completed their high school education; the minimum age for entry onto the course is 17.

Is it essential to have an IELTS or TOEFL score in order to apply for the course?
No. We welcome applications from students without these qualifications. Applicants who do not have an IELTS or TOEFL score can take the Language Centre’s English Language Test in order to meet the entry requirements of the course.

What is the Application Procedure?
The application procedure for the course is very straight forward and usually takes no more than one week if responses are received promptly. The first step is to decide when to join the course (September, January or April) and what level of English is needed for the chosen term.

There is no deadline for applications but they should be submitted as early as possible with the application form completed in full by the applicant.

Students without an existing language qualification or who
are not sure of the level of English they currently have may be advised to take the Language Centre’s English Language Test after their application is submitted. This will enable the admissions tutor to decide which course is most suitable.
